Gynaecomastia in Men

Male breast enlargement or 'Gynaecomastia' (gynaecomastia)is relatively common. It is prevalent at either end of the male reproductive cycle occurring in adolescent boys and the elderly. When it occurs near puberty 90% of the time symptoms disappear as adolescence wanes.

There are several causes:

  • puberty
  • overweight
  • aging
  • steroid use medication side affect
  • tumour
  • liver disease
  • genetic disorders
  • castration
  • hormone imbalance
Gynaecomastia can be emotionally challenging. Feelings of embarrassment are common. One does not feel masculine in a society where masculinity is exalted.

Treatment
In cases of obesity, weight loss can alter the Gynaecomastia condition, but for many it will not eliminate it. For all other causes, surgery is the only known physical remedy.

Surgical options

Surgical excision
The traditional technique involves a surgical incision and scar. Through this incision the breast tissue is shaped to define a less prominent breast. Importantly not all the breast tissue is removed as a small disc of breast tissue must be left as a pad under the areola. This pad of tissue is important to prevent contour distortion and adherence of the nipple to the underlying muscle.

Lipoaspiration
The introduction of liposuction has changed the way many cases of gynaecomastia are managed. This technique involves small incision and through these incisions fat and small amounts of breast tissue are aspirated.

In very glandular breast a combination of the two techniques is required.

What do I need to do to prepare for the surgery?
Avoid smoking, aspirin-containing products and any other drugs that can affect bleeding.

What is the recovery time Initial recovery time if from seven to 10 days. If drains are placed, they usually remain for about three days, then removed during a follow-up visit. Then, complete recovery time is from four to six weeks. This means no heavy exercise such as lifting weights, vigorous workouts at the gym, or any other strenuous activity. Also, I advise my patients to wear a compressive garment for least four weeks after their procedure.

This respect for your healing will optimise your result. You have invested a lot of your time and money in this procedure; you have to also invest the time in yourself for optimum results.
