In cases of obesity, weight loss can alter the Gynaecomastia condition, but for many it will not eliminate it. For all other causes, surgery is the only known physical remedy.
Surgical options
Surgical excision
The traditional technique involves a surgical incision and scar. Through this incision the breast tissue is shaped to define a less prominent breast. Importantly not all the breast tissue is removed as a small disc of breast tissue must be left as a pad under the areola.
This pad of tissue is important to prevent contour distortion and adherence of the nipple to the underlying muscle.
Lipoaspiration
The introduction of liposuction has changed the way many cases of gynaecomastia are managed. This technique involves small incision and through these incisions fat and small amounts of breast tissue are aspirated.
In very glandular breast a combination of the two techniques is required.
