Genetically Asians are predisposed to a wider lower face. In oriental culture a square face is linked as more masculine & unhappy life. An oval face is linked with being more obedient and feminine.

Many factors contribute to the square look:

  • Widening of the mandible bone
  • Thickened chewing (Masseter Muscle)
  • This width is frequently referred to as “benign masseteric hypertrophy.”

Masseteric hypertrophy is thought to be due to excessive action, particularly diet factors - chewing dried squid, meat, fibrous vegetables, betel nut, etc. Additionally Personal habits - jaw clenching/grinding of the teeth.

Historically, surgical techniques with resection portions of the bony mandible with and without removal of the masseter muscle, has been performed.

More recently, the use of botulinum A or B toxin (BTX) has been reported for the correction of masseteric hypertrophy. Muscle relaxing injections (BTX) in a single treatment can improve the look.
