Teenage Plastic surgery
The Sunday Telegraph (27 August) reports that the NSW State Government is planning to introduce regulations making it more difficult for people under 18 to undergo purely cosmetic procedures.
The changes have been personally driven by Premier Morris Iemma,…..
Earlier this year I wrote a report on the responsible approach to request by teenagers seeking cosmetic change.
The article and my position is repeated below.
Today a spokesperson and colleague Mr Norm Olbourne for the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, says “most teenagers who do have cosmetic surgery are worthy cases and legislation could interfere with that.”
I personally call on the premier to look at the issue in a wider sense. Look at the issue of non surgeons recommending and performing cosmetic enhancements. The Royal College of Surgeons is the body controlling surgical standards and a qualification less than Fellowship of the RACS or similar opens the industry up to poor quality control and then abuse.
Legislate to improve standards not restrict the rights of a section of the community to achieve the benefits that flow from wise and informed choices!
